OTT in broadcasting stands for Over The Top content. It refers to the delivery of audio, video and other media over the internet without the involvement of a multi-system operator in the control and distribution of the content.
That means in OTT channels, content is delivered to the users via the internet and not through traditional cable/broadcast provider. This includes platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hotstar are examples of OTT channels.
OTT commonly applied to video-on-demand platforms, but sometimes also refers to audio streaming or internet-based voice calling solutions. Since OTT doesn’t user traditional cable network you can enjoy an OTT service as long as you have access to an internet connection. You can access the complete service at your leisure.
OTT services are typically monetized via paid subscriptions, but there are a few exceptions. For example, some OTT platforms might offer in-app purchases or advertising. Platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Videos and Hotstar use the paid subscription technique and on the other hand platforms like Hulu use paid subscription as well as advertising to monetize.
As of right now the OTT and video on demand market is enormous. They are also projected to grow even more with time as people switch from traditional cable media to video-on-demand services. It is projected that by the end of 2020 the OTT or video on demand market will have doubled in size. With the current Covid-19 pandemic as more people are staying and their homes watching all their favourite shows, this projection is estimated to grow more. In 2018 Netflix’s market value was $152 Billion(USD). Today Netflix is worth more than $258 Billion USD. Not just Netflix, even Indian streaming platform like Hotstar are also growing in value.
The reason why the video-on-demand market is growing in such a rapid pace is because is the quality of content and flexibility. Services such as Amazon Prime and Netflix provides us with really good and high-quality shows. Also, they allow us to watch any show at any time we want. We don’t get this kind of flexibility with traditional media where we can watch a certain show only at a fixed time.
