Content optimization tricks to revive old articles & boost traffic

Many of us who already have a blog know the basics of content optimization. But how many do this? And those who optimize their content, do they work correctly? Or what happens if we use outbound links in our articles?

There are some annoying errors that often occur when people write content or blogs. This article tries to answer these questions and gives a little secret that you might not know, which can revive older posts and also boost traffic.

Content optimization – what is it?

Content optimization is an important concept for those who want to improve rankings, as Google always wants relevant and informative content. In other words, if you write something useful about a specific topic, the chances of being ranked by search engines are higher. But how can you make your contents more optimized?

There are some tricks and hacks, that can help you easily solve this problem:

1. Analyze your old content and identify what to improve

A simple analysis of your older content will help you better understand what parts could be improved.

For example, if you want to revise an older blog post, read it and try to figure out what can increase its value. You might decide that the old content is awesome as it is, but you should still think about things like:

  • Is the topic current? Were there any recent changes in technology or society? If yes – this means your content needs some touching up
  • What kind of images do you have? How many years has it been since the last image update? Maybe posting new pictures to provide additional information would be a good idea

The first thing to do is to go through all your content and try to split it into three different criteria:

  • Posts that are still good, but not perfect. These should be your main source of inspiration for updating old content into a new masterpiece
  • Posts that need a major change – a total revamp will do the trick. There is no sense in updating these, but you still can give it a try
  • Posts that are obsolete and/or completely useless. Delete them or promote them to pieces of “featured content” on your blog

If you managed to update all the posts from this list, congratulations! You could increase your quality score with Google and even get more traffic from search engines. Go ahead and pat yourself on the shoulder – you deserve it!

The content you need to delete

There are a few types of content that, more often than not, don’t deserve to be on your website. In some cases, they can even harm your SEO efforts. Here’s a quick list:

  • Duplicate content
  • Thin or low-quality content
  • Obsolete content
  • Irrelevant content

If you have any of these types of content on your website, it’s time for a serious cleanup. Get rid of it, or improve it so that it matches the quality standards of your blog.

The content you still can update

After deleting the content types listed above, you can focus on what to do with your remaining content. There are three main categories of content that need updating:

  • Content that is too short or doesn’t contain enough information
  • Content that is outdated or no longer relevant (this could also be obsolete)
  • Content that does not appear  in search engines because it was never optimized for search engines

2. Topic clusters and interlinking

Creating clusters is a great way to organize content and save yourself from a lot of work later. It can also help you easily identify your failed projects and understand what went wrong to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

Once you have created your topic clusters, it’s time to start interlinking them. This is a great way to show Google that your site is an authority on a certain topic. And the more links you have from high-quality sites, the better your site will rank.

3. Improving readability and multimedia

One of the easiest ways to improve your content is by making sure it is easy to read. This includes using short paragraphs, headings and subheadings, lists, and images. You should also use simple language that everyone can understand.

Adding multimedia to your content can help keep readers engaged and increase the chances that they will share it with others. You can see this trick in different online slots. This doesn’t mean you need to add video and audio. You can include images, charts, graphs, infographics and more.

4. Republishing and distribution

One of the best ways to revive old content is to republish it. You can do this by rewriting it, so it’s fresh and new, or by simply republishing it with a new headline.

You can also distribute your content in other ways. For example, submit articles to popular blogs and websites, post them on social media, or include them in email newsletters.

Conclusion

Optimizing old content is a really efficient way of attracting more organic traffic. By following the tips in this article, you can revive old articles and boost your traffic levels.
